The disappearances got longer

The disappearances got longer. Eventually she did completely vanish. I haven’t seen her for probably six months. But given how slowly it happened, I’m pretty sure she found somebody else, rather than having something happen to her. Another cat who did something similar, I know, was adopted, because I ran into her and her new family a couple of months later on a walk around the neighborhood. So disappearances don’t always mean tragedy. So cats certainly can disappear for a while and then turn back up. A couple weeks isn’t impossible.

I also have a half a dozen or so cats who I see consistently every day, two of whom spend most of their time in my backyard. I’m considering whether they qualify if they’re that consistent for a year or more. None of them have ever disappeared for more than five days - and when Blaise didn’t show up for five days, I honestly thought he was dead. When he did come back, he’d lost weight and had probably gotten a door closed on him and had been trapped somewhere. Cats have territories, though they can and often do share them, or their territories overlap with other cats. I don’t want to give you false hope. If the cat that lived almost exclusively in your backyard has suddenly been gone for a while, it probably wasn’t his idea. It doesn’t mean he absolutely isn’t coming back. But almost certainly, something happened.

Hopefully you have her in a small kennel for the cat’s safety in the car

Hopefully you have her in a small kennel for the cat’s safety in the car, use your voice to calm and reassure the cat telling it “it’s okay, you’re alright” in a calm low natural voice, because your can can detect fear or anxiety in your voice and become agitated itself. Your cat can REMEMBER what happened at the Vet’s office so it is wise to take a few very short trips with the cat in the crate to get it used to a nice ride for a little bit and then home again.

My dog was obedience trained, and would go willingly into the Vet’s office AT FIRST, but of course, they don’t forget what was done in the exam room (usually shots, injections, that hurt just a bit, and the whole thing can be a bit scary for them. My dog (on leash) got so she would balk on the leash outside the Vet’s office, and wouldn’t move. So I had to go through putting her in a kennel and taking her in the car, and my Vet would take care of her down on her level rather than my having to hoist her up on the exam table, which was nice and less scary to my dog. But later, I simply had the Vet come to my house for shots. If the Vet can bring things with her to your house that is great, but sometimes they need their office equipment like x-rays and other devices so it is just necessary to take the pet into the Vet’s office. Vets understand all about animals and most are very kind and will work with the animals to make the visit as comfortable and less scary as possible, bless them!

To declaw a cat, they must be put under anesthesia. While there certainly are times when this is medically necessary, it is taking a chance when there is not a medical reason to have general surgery. Yes, surgery is much safer than it used to be for both humans and animals, anesthesia, though, can still cause problems. Cats can have a reaction to the anesthesia which can cause other medical issues (maybe even life long) or they could die during surgery. It’s possible that they could lose a lot of blood during surgery. That can be dangerous. They could develop an infection after surgery. Declawing a cat is not a good reason for putting them at risk this way since it is not a medically necessary procedure.

Then, there is the issue of protection. Your cat would have no way of protecting itself if it got outside. S/he couldn’t fight off other animals nor could s/he climb a tree for protection. Hopefully, you don’t let your cat outdoors as there are already too many ways s/he is put into needless danger by doing that. However, even cats who are indoors all of the time sometimes find themselves on the street. Unfortunately, there are some people who throw a cat onto the street when they don’t want him/her anymore. Sometimes cats escape because something in the house scares them (strangers coming into the house to work, a loud bang, etc.). In fact, I once had a cat find herself on the porch. She was running down the hallway. She normally would stop at the door. This day, though, someone happened to come through the door just as my cat made it to the door. The person didn’t have time to register that this wild cat was running her way and the cat was running so fast that she didn’t realize the door was open. Fortunately, my cat was a bit shocked to find herself on the porch, so she just sat there and we were able to just pick her up and bring her back inside. She could have, though, just kept running. If our neighbor's dog (who was always escaping) had started chasing her, Katy wouldn’t have been able to protect herself at all.

There is no good reason to have a cat declawed.

There is no good reason to have a cat declawed. It is a cruel procedure and abuse to make them live with the after effects of it. Fortunately, most vets will no longer do that procedure on cats. If I had a vet who was willing to do that to a cat, I would find a new vet. I will say that there might be a very small percentage of cats who might need to have the procedure done for a medical reason, but that would be rare; and, if there were a medical reason, I’m guessing that the vet would only remove the one claw or only the ones on the paw where there is a medical issue. It would have to be a major medical issue, though. Most people want to have their cats declawed because they don’t want to get scratched or care more about their furniture than the cat. Those are not reasons for getting a cat declawed. So, no. You should not get your cat declawed. It is not even something you should be considering.
