Several years after all this, kids wind up going to different middle schools and high schools and drift apart. Still friends, but not as tight. I am coming home with family from somewhere near halloween, Son in high school, and he tells me that he borrowed a costume from his old friend and it was to be on the front porch when we get home. My son was very disappointed when we got home and there was no costume on the porch, as he had planned to use it at a party he was going to. The nice surprise was when we walk into the house, and the costume was on the dining room table. Seems his birthday had not changed, and he still had access to the house when he needed it. They were inseparable at the bus stop, after school and whatnot… One issue that was a bit of a concern for the other family was that their kids (Son same age as my son, daughter near my daughter’s age) were latchkey kids. At that time, I had combination (Push button) locks on my house, as I did not want my kids to forget a key and get locked out… The 4 digits were easy for my kids to remember as I used their birthday month and day. (Locks could take 10 combinations)… The neighbor confides in me a concern they had for their latchkey kids as one day they got spooked about something when they were home alone… I invited them over, and as a safe house in the neighborhood (From other events in the past) they were happy to be able to use my house as a second safe space… I even programmed both their birth days into my front door… Long set up. Sorry…

I went back downstairs to see if the TV was still acting strange. Everything was normal again. Their father was sitting in his easy chair reading the Wall Street Journal, the report cards all but forgotten. That seemed to be the end of whatever had been going on. The girls told their friends we had a poltergeist, or a ghost, but I always thought differently. Wasn’t it strange that those things only happened when their father was on a verbal rampage? Wasn’t it strange how it all disappeared when the girls and I went upstairs and he stopped yelling? I have been living in San Francisco for about 20 years now but am originally from Mexico. In Mexico, Halloween is not traditionally celebrated (although that is now changing.) Around the same date, though, Mexicans celebrate The Day of The Dead (on November 2.)
