It's not that wolves don't have the brainpower to understand these things, more that they lack the inclination, and that, where a dog might respond with submission to commands and dominant behavior from people, wolves are much likelier to respond with their own dominance behavior and aggression.

I know some people are experts in pheromones and body language. But I look at the playful stance. If one dog is perceived as aggressive, the other bows down , not to be confused with the playful stance, which is rear up , front paws down with head close to ground and tail wagging. The submissive stance is the dog getting flat on the ground . If I perceive ears back,teeth out,I do not approach to let my dog sniff. One such case two years back a dog ran up on my dog when I was walking him at night, the dog was unleashed , and I saw he had mange I grabbed my dog up and backed away. Ended up this guy had 8 dogs in an apartment mostly large and he let them out to run at night without accompanying them. I didn't stop to catalogue their dog's compatibility with mine. I left with my dog in my arms.

When you let him walk him, something you NEED to do for about 3 miles at LEAST a day, make him sit calmly at the door while you leash him. Put your hand on the knob and say Let's Go as you open the door. Make sure you go out the door first. Yes it actually does matter. When you bring him inside he needs to be sitting at the door calmly and Lets Go when you are ready to go inside. Make him sit calmly while you unleash him. If you get really good you can ask him to shake paws after he is unleashed. My Hoolie does that for me. Praise praise praise in the form of pets, tiny training treats and verbal praise will be essential.

When you feed him, you need to make him sit and wait til YOU give him his food. What I do with my own dog is tell him Hoolie sit wait (some use stay I choose wait) I also give him the hand signals that means sit and wait. Then I get his food dish and walk over to put in his kibble and yogurt. If he gets up I make an ER noise and take him back to sit and wait. Once I finish making his food I put the bowl down. Then I tell him Hoolie go eat. That command to eat releases him from his wait command.
