Since cats, including strays, are often fed by people they have no need to move into areas with more available prey and will continue to kill to the point of extinction.

It is also worse for the cat; outdoor cats have significantly shorter lifespans than cats that are kept exclusively indoors. Cars, larger predators, diseases, and angry neighbors are all very real threats.

 If I hadn’t rescued the animals that live in my home, they would have been killed. Two of the cats were declawed when I got them—which is a horrible thing to do to them. It’s like amputating a human’s fingers. If they were let loose in the wild, they’d be defenseless. One of the dogs was abused. The other (for reasons I don’t know) came to me with extreme separation anxiety. I spend much more of my time, energy, and money on keeping these five animals happy lives than I do on myself or my wife. Still, I’m open to the possibility that your neighbor has some sort of point. But the way she’s expressed it is confusing, and as I can’t talk to her, it’s hard for me to know what her point is. I’m also not sure what an “equal friendship” is. I don’t have “equal friendships.” I just have people and animals I love.

 Owning pets may be a good or a bad thing, but it sounds like your neighbor is making some sort of claim about psychology that’s not necessarily true. I have three cats and two dogs, and while—maybe—that’s a bad thing, I find the idea of being a god, a dictator, or a bully extremely repugnant. If you offered me a million dollars to be any of those things for a day, I’d turn you down. (I am turned off even by the idea of being a benevolent leader.) So at least on the level of motivation, your neighbor is wrong in my case.

 Absolutely. They know when another animal is ill and they know when the other animal is dying. They know when I’m ill. They know many things we probably can’t imagine. They certainly know when they have an appointment with the vet. Maybe you can’t imagine what I have to go through to get my cats to the vet, even though our vet is unfailingly kind and gentle. She has asked more than once if I’d like her to tend to my own wounds acquired from trying to get a determined cat into a carrier. We have a wonderful vet.

There wouldn’t be any pain, but he might act startled if the light had entered one or both eyes. I would never use a laser pointer as a cat toy (if that’s what you were doing); a cat will just as easily chase the white spot of light from a torch or flashlight, and that won’t do any damage if he looks into it. If you need to use a laser pointer, then keep the cat out of the room, but frankly, I’d put it in a drawer with the batteries out, and forget I had it.
