Owning pets may be a good or a bad thing, but it sounds like your neighbor is making some sort of claim about psychology that’s not necessarily true. I have three cats and two dogs, and while—maybe—that’s a bad thing, I find the idea of being a god, a dictator, or a bully extremely repugnant. If you offered me a million dollars to be any of those things for a day, I’d turn you down. (I am turned off even by the idea of being a benevolent leader.) So at least on the level of motivation, your neighbor is wrong in my case.
