Winter in Minnesota can be pure, unadulterated shit. It can also be extraordinarily beautiful. Just make sure you’ve got good tires and dress like an intelligent person. Buy some mukluks and wear long underwear. It’s not that cold. Winters have gotten milder. True story: my grandfather’s grandfather briefly moved to Minnesota from central Indiana in the 1870s, living down by Wabasha on the Mississippi River. He was in his early 20’s, worked on a farm for a year… and immediately high-tailed it back to Indiana the following spring. If I had to guess, it’s because that winter was just too cold and dark for him. But that was the 1870s, when Minnesota was, in fact, significantly colder. Minnesota can still be very cold, but part of the myth of Minnesota cold was founded in the 19th century, when it was far colder than it is now. And that was back when people didn’t have electric and gas furnaces. They pissed outside in an outhouse. And they had to wake up at 3 a.m. to milk the cows.
