Why do you want to teach your dog to swim underwater? My 12 your old cocker spaniel loves swimming and as it’s low impact on her arthritic joints we take her frequently and have done so since she was young as she loves water. However, throughout all these years she’s never attempted nor shown any desire to submerge her head underwater and is constantly watched when paddling/swimming in case she gets into any difficulties. On a few occasions she has panicked when the water has got a little too deep for her and she hasn’t been able to keep her head up and has had to be ‘rescued’. We only ever let her swim in shallow water and not quite sure why anyone would want their dog swimming underwater?
