If I hadn’t rescued the animals that live in my home, they would have been killed. Two of the cats were declawed when I got them—which is a horrible thing to do to them. It’s like amputating a human’s fingers. If they were let loose in the wild, they’d be defenseless. One of the dogs was abused. The other (for reasons I don’t know) came to me with extreme separation anxiety. I spend much more of my time, energy, and money on keeping these five animals happy lives than I do on myself or my wife. Still, I’m open to the possibility that your neighbor has some sort of point. But the way she’s expressed it is confusing, and as I can’t talk to her, it’s hard for me to know what her point is. I’m also not sure what an “equal friendship” is. I don’t have “equal friendships.” I just have people and animals I love.
