Are dog breeds substantial evidence of evolution?

Yes. Darwin studied artificial selection deeply, including dogs and pigeons and flowers and food crops, and applied various lessons from those studies to the idea of Natural Selection. He later studied finches in the Galapagos Islands, where there was substantial variation in beak shapes and sizes from year to year because of weather affecting food sources, so that varieties that fit the available food better were selected for reproduction. It is a great shame that Darwin never read Mendel’s brilliant paper on pea genetics, which Mendel sent him. It was found among Darwin’s papers, with the pages uncut, after he died.
