Same as with western animated stories. Anime tends to shy away less from certain things and has more animated stories available for adults with adult themes than western animation, but will still have some degree of censorship. Something you should know though, is that sometimes it allows for some less than okay “anime” to get out there and remain available for unsuspecting people to watch and potentially get traumatised about even some of the most well liked anime, will contain scenes that we now are more aware aren’t really okay (like Ouran Highschool Host Club’s beach episode and of course the whole of Boku No Pico and Redo of a Healer amongst other shows). On the other hand, it allows for shows that would be unnecessarily cancelled for being a bit more morally grey and forgiving towards various characters, which depending on your views you might prefer.
