This is not so much a controversial thing with adult characters, but when teenage characters are involved it understandably doesn’t sit well with everyone. Particularly adults, but some young people are concerned/annoyed by this too. Even so, it tends to capture people’s attention and appeals to quite a few fans, so teenage girls in bikinis with unusually large breasts and shirtless teenage boys will unrealistically well defined abs, and young people caught in questionable positions, are probably not going to disappear from anime completely any time soon. You should also prepare yourself for anime mascots, character types such as tsunderes, yanderes and bakaderes, stoic/angry/dark rivals, and a lot of characters that will probably always remain children at heart no matter their age who serve as the main characters in anime… as well as the many, many, many other tropes within anime.
