But the leaders of the Colonial Empire believe expansion is the only way to ensure long-term survival. It’s not necessarily justified, no, and that’s intentional – they’re operating out of the fear of what could happen otherwise. Stay complacent, try to get along… and risk being devoured by an empire they might not even KNOW about yet. Humanity in this story is like that snail you don’t feel crunching under your boots as you walk home on a rainy night. Exactly. We’re not in a war because some alien’s boots already stepped down – we’re at war because we are desperate to keep that from ever happening, because the second it does, humanity stops.
