The two proverbs are often considered to convey the same meaning and offer the same advice. In fact, sometimes the one is used as a loose, paraphrase-like, meaning-based translation of the other. The general idea is that one needs to be very careful of one’s milieu and acquaintances. That said, if I had to find differences between the two, I’d say the English proverb focuses more on company with the wrong kind of people, whereas the Greek one emphasizes getting into problematic situations instead (or, in general). Notice how dogs are individual beings, hence they stand for people, but the brain isn’t. Another point of divergence is what the two proverbs warn about. Again, the English one is almost completely about adopting bad habits, personified by the fleas. On the contrary, the Greek one is about getting yourself in danger. It’s not that you necessarily change, but that you’re asking for trouble.
