Genes determine what the typical maximum age a species can expect to live to.

It is all in the genes. Genes determine what the typical maximum age a species can expect to live to. During evolutionary history the animal’s genome optimizes its life span. Longer lifespan is not always better for the species as a whole. In some cases longer lifespan shifts the limited amount of energy available into self repair mechanisms and away from reproduction. If so then a shorter lived mutant which has more offspring would over time outnumber longer lived mutants which have fewer offspring.
