Interestingly enough, Ireland is in fact rabies free. The only way someone is even able to get rabies in the first place is if they get bit by a rabid animal or they decide to go out trying to eat infected squirrels! I don't really think either of those things are factors in your situation though right? I also highly doubt that the cute little puppy you were playing with was displaying any signs of having rabies. Which include but are not limited to, foaming at the mouth, bleeding at the site where they were bitten by the infected animal and severe neurological changes. Have you ever seen that movie Cujo? That's rabies.
